In Our Parish : SVD Priests and seminarian’s visit

July 17, 2025

On the weekend of 12th /13th July, at Holy Family Parish, we were blessed to have some visitors from the Divine Word Missionaries order. Fr Elmer Ibarra, Rector of the Divine Word Missionary seminary in Melbourne and Fr Linh Nguyen, the Formator of the seminarians concelebrated mass with Fr Henry at the 5pm Saturday vigil mass and the 9am Sunday mass.

Eight seminarians also came and one of them, Joseph Duong Quoc Khoa, 29, from South Vietnam shared his vocational story after the Gospel. Joseph has been with the Divine Word Missionaries for 10 years and is in his 2nd year of Theology studies in Melbourne.

In Joseph’s reflection, he said that his vocation was ‘ not just a personal journey between him and God, but also included his parents and friends and especially his congregation, who have supported him along the way’.

Joseph also asked himself the same question from this weekend’s gospel, the story of The Good Samaritan, (Luke 10:25-37) ‘What must I do to inherit eternal life ?’He found his answer that ‘walking with Jesus was not only about having a close prayer life, but living actively in service to others. ‘Love God and love your neighbour’

Joseph concluded, saying that he was looking forward to his life as a missionary priest and he and his brother seminarians have asked for our continued prayers.

After Mass, many parishioners stayed and had the opportunity to meet and chat with the seminarians.
