GB Pergolesi’s, “Stabat Mater” is a musical meditation on the suffering of Mary on Good Friday inspired by a poem by Jacopone da Todi.
It refers to the prophecy of Simeon, that a sword shall pierce the heart of Christ’s mother (Luke 2: 35,) describing Mary’s intense sorrow at seeing her beloved Son on the cross.
