In our parish : No Greater Love – Week 4
March 26, 2026
The fourth session with Charbel brings us to the last moments of Christ’s life as we walk with Him during His journey to Calvary. Some moments to reflect on are:
Jesus falls three times and gets back up which is linked to the three temptations Adam and Eve fell to, but Jesus overcomes and keeps going.
He comes face to face with his suffering mother Mary and says to her “I will make all things new.”
Simon of Cyrene, who did not know Jesus was forced to carry the cross. Simon then becomes a believer and Jesus’ first disciple. This is a reminder of what Jesus said, “If you want to be a disciple of mine, you must take up your cross and follow me daily.”
Veronica wipes the face of Jesus with her veil. Her name means Icon and her veil which has Christ’s face imprinted on it is still seen today, as her veil is displayed in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome every year on Passion Sunday.
Jesus meets the weeping women and tells them to not weep for him but for themselves and their children. Why? Because very soon after Jesus leaves this earth, the early followers will be persecuted. We also can be persecuted because we are Christian. But how do we get others to come back to the church? It begins with belief and faith followed by invitation and backed up by witness. If people don’t see Him in us, where are they going to see Him?
Jesus dies and is there for three days before He is taken down and placed in the tomb.
Holy Saturday there is a silence on the earth. Jesus descends to Hades and the gates of hell are opened for the Old Testament prophets and us to enter heaven.
When we look at the cross and reflect on what Jesus went through, it makes our pain and suffering bearable. Our prayer to Jesus should be to help us bear it and turn our suffering into an offering back to God which becomes the most powerful prayer you can pray, especially when it is offered for a special intention.
The final session of this program is 26 March 2026 at 7pm.
